The Benefits of Telehealth Therapy: Flexible Online Therapy for Children, Teens, and Adults

Finding the right therapist is an important step toward taking care of your mental health, however, practical barriers can make getting consistent support difficult. Barriers can include conflicts with transportation and schedules, work and/or school responsibilities, childcare, travel time in addition to session time, and other everyday demands, which can all make attending traditional in-person therapy challenging.

At Ever Forward Therapy, we provide telehealth therapy for children, adolescents, and adults in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Ohio. Online therapy gives clients the opportunity to access professional mental health support from a private, comfortable location while allowing therapy to fit more easily into their lives due to its flexibility.

Can online therapy really provide the same connection as meeting with a therapist in person?

This is a completely reasonable question and concern that we often hear from prospective clients. Therapy is personal, and the relationship between a client and therapist is foundational to effective treatment work. While telehealth therapy is different from sitting together in an office, many of the essential elements of therapy remain present including conversation, connection, reflection, collaboration, and support.

What Is Telehealth Therapy?

Telehealth therapy, sometimes called online therapy or virtual therapy, allows clients to meet with a therapist through a secure video platform rather than traveling to a physical office.

At Ever Forward Therapy, telehealth allows us to work with children, adolescents, and adults throughout the states where our clinicians are licensed. Online therapy can be used to address a wide range of emotional, behavioral, and mental health concerns. Depending on the individual client, therapy may provide support around anxiety, depression, stress, relationships, life transitions, self-esteem, coping skills, family concerns, and many other challenges. The specific goals of therapy will always depend on the individual.

Greater Access to Therapy

One of the most significant benefits of telehealth therapy is accessibility. Finding a therapist who is a good fit isn't always easy. A client may live far from providers who specialize in the type of support they need, have limited transportation, or struggle to find appointments that work with their schedule. Telehealth can remove some of those barriers.

Rather than spending additional time traveling to and from an office, clients can participate in therapy from an appropriate private location. For families, this can be particularly helpful when coordinating therapy for children or adolescents around school, activities, work, and other family responsibilities.

For adults, telehealth may make it easier to incorporate therapy into a demanding work or personal schedule. Often, our clients meet on their lunch breaks, flex their work schedules, or meet with us on work from home days.

Access isn't simply about whether therapy exists; it is also about whether therapy is realistically accessible within someone's life.

Consistency Matters

Starting therapy is one step, but maintaining a consistent therapeutic relationship is another. Life doesn't always cooperate with our schedules. We understand that work runs late, children get sick, school schedules change, and traffic creates delays. We recognize that responsibilities come up and can create challenges in consistently attending appointments. These challenges specifically, can sometimes make it difficult to attend an in-person appointment. However, because telehealth eliminates the need to commute to a therapist's office, it may make maintaining regular sessions more manageable and provide more ease to step away into a separate room while at home, block time in a workday, or shift appointments if needed.

That consistency can be particularly valuable for children and adolescents whose schedules are often influenced by school, extracurricular activities, family commitments, and transportation needs. For adults, eliminating travel time can make it easier to preserve a regular therapy appointment even during particularly busy periods.

Telehealth doesn't eliminate life's interruptions, but it can remove additional barriers to maintaining continuity of care.

Flexibility for Real Life

Another important benefit of online therapy is flexibility. A traditional in-person appointment may require considerable time beyond the therapy session itself. Factors such as commuting, parking, waiting, and unpredictable delays returning home afterward can create barriers to consistency in care. With telehealth, much of that additional time can be eliminated. For some clients, this means being able to attend therapy from home while for others, it may mean participating from another appropriate private location, such as their vehicle, workspace, or trusted person’s residence.

This can be especially helpful for families. Parents and caregivers often must coordinate multiple schedules at once and ensure coverage or childcare for session time. Telehealth therapy can make coordinating mental health care a little more manageable.

Does Telehealth Therapy Lose Something Important?

This is perhaps the biggest concern people have when considering online therapy.

"Will my therapist really be able to understand me through a screen?"

It is natural to wonder whether being physically together in the same room provides something that cannot be replicated online and it is true that telehealth is not exactly the same experience as in-person therapy.

When two people share a physical space, there are aspects of the environment and nonverbal communication that occur naturally. Technical difficulties, distractions, or privacy concerns can also occasionally interfere with a virtual session. However, meaningful therapy involves much more than sharing a physical room. During a telehealth session, clients and therapists can still communicate in real time and are able to observe facial expressions, tone of voice, pauses, changes in speech, and other aspects of communication which remain part of the interaction.

Perhaps most importantly, therapy is built around the therapeutic relationship. This entails being listened to, feeling understood and having a safe space to explore thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Therapy also entails identifying areas for growth and developing new coping strategies to work collaboratively towards goals. These elements don't disappear simply because the conversation happens via telehealth instead of in person. At Ever Forward Therapy, we have worked with clients through TTC and fertility issues, pregnancy losses and pregnancy after loss, postpartum, separations and divorces (as well as coparenting afterwards), transitions from high school into college, moving homes and changing jobs, amongst many other concerns. The flexibility afforded by telehealth has meant that through all of these trying times, we are accessible and ready to help.

Telehealth Can Also Feel More Comfortable for Some Clients

Another benefit of online therapy is that some clients may feel more comfortable participating from a familiar environment. At Ever Forward Therapy, we often notice telehealth preference with children and adolescents where being in an office can feel intimidating and anxiety inducing. However, being in their own space can make therapy feel more comfortable as opposed to entering an unfamiliar office.

For adults, being at home can eliminate the experience of traveling to an appointment or sitting in a waiting room.

Telehealth also allows ongoing access to pets; we notice clients often have their animals sitting nearby or in their laps for sessions which can be comforting and grounding.

Despite the above mentioned, some people may feel more connected when they are physically sitting with their therapist, and that's completely valid. The goal is not to suggest that one format is right for everyone, but rather to find a format that allows our clients to engage meaningfully in therapy.

Telehealth Therapy for Children, Adolescents, and Adults

At Ever Forward Therapy, we recognize that mental health support looks different at different stages of life.

Children may need help understanding and expressing emotions, developing coping skills, navigating family or school concerns, or working through behavioral challenges. Adolescents may be navigating increasing independence, friendships, academic pressures, identity, relationships, anxiety, stress, and other challenges that come with growing up. Adults may seek therapy for a wide range of concerns, including relationships, anxiety, depression or other mental health challenges, stress, life transitions, self-esteem, work-life balance, or simply wanting greater insight into themselves and their patterns.

Telehealth allows therapy to be adapted to the individual while providing the convenience of meeting virtually.

Is Online Therapy Right for You or Your Family?

There is no single therapy format that works for everyone. Some clients prefer in-person therapy, while other clients appreciate the convenience and flexibility of telehealth. For many people, the most important factor is having access to a therapist with whom they feel comfortable and supported. If you're considering therapy for yourself or a loved one, telehealth may offer a practical way to begin.

At Ever Forward Therapy, we provide telehealth therapy to clients in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Ohio, working with children, adolescents, and adults across a range of mental health concerns, transitions, and stressors. You don't have to have everything figured out before reaching out, the first step can be simply starting a conversation.
