Life is full of seasons, and sometimes it can feel like a lot. You're balancing relationships, family, friendships, and work, all while trying to find time for self care, do your laundry and get a good night's sleep. Contrary to what many people believe, therapy isn't just for those in crisis. Therapy can be a helpful tool for anyone, whether you're navigating major life changes, or simply need support coping with everyday challenges. So how do you know if it might be helpful to start therapy? In this post, therapist Selena Lindamood, a licensed therapist in New Jersey, discusses some signs you might benefit from reaching out to a therapist.

Your Brain is Constantly Noisy

It seems impossible to turn your brain off. Day or night, it feels like your thoughts are always running about something - your to-do list, unanswered emails, something you wish you said (or didn't). When you're finding it hard to be present because you're always worried about the next thing, or ruminating on the past, therapy might be useful in sorting through the noise. A therapist can work with you to understand what's fueling your overthinking, build healthier thought patterns and identify triggers to develop a more peaceful internal dialogue.

You Always Feel Drained

You're feeling run down and fatigued. You're frequently overwhelmed and might even find yourself frozen and unable to get started on your to-do list. No matter how much you sleep, you don't feel rested. Daily life feels draining, even though nothing "big" is going on. If your baseline has started to feel like you're running on empty, a therapist can help you explore sources of stress and identify patterns that might be contributing to overwhelm and burnout. Therapy can help you to learn and implement sustainable habits to protect your mental health.

You're Finding it Hard to Regulate Your Emotions

You're feeling on edge. Maybe you're snapping more than you'd like, finding it harder to be patient with others, crying more easily than you usually would or reacting more intensely to things that wouldn't typically irritate or anger you. Heightened emotions can be a sign of stress, and if you have been experiencing persistent emotional fatigue, this might be a not-so-subtle sign you're carrying more stress, anxiety or unresolved emotions than you realize. First and foremost, therapy might be a great place to find support where you don't feel the pressure to "keep it all together". A therapist can help you develop the emotional awareness and regulation skills to manage intense emotions more effectively.

You're Going Through a Major Life Change

Experiencing a significant life change can come with mixed emotions. Maybe you've started a new job, moved to a new city, started a new relationship or welcomed a child. Perhaps you've experienced the loss of a loved one, a breakup, job loss, or are experiencing infertility or health challenges. Even a "positive" transition can come with intense emotions and big adjustments. Therapy can serve as a source of stability and support as you navigate changes in circumstances, both negative and positive. A therapist can help you process the emotions that accompany big change, helping you to adjust and thrive.

You're Numbing

Maybe you stay busy or over-scheduled to avoid being alone with your thoughts. You're reaching for a glass of wine every night to unwind. You scroll social media for hours every night. These might be some not-so-subtle ways you're avoiding your feelings. Therapy offers a safe space to slow down and learn to shift towards self-acceptance. A therapist can help you in building emotional awareness and developing the coping skills and distress tolerance techniques to work through those emotions.

So, Do I Need Therapy?

My simple answer is yes, anyone can benefit from therapy. Whether things are going well or you've been struggling lately, therapy serves as a safe place to process the present, explore your past and learn skills and strategies to help you in the future. Things don't have to be falling apart for us to seek support. You deserve to feel validated and supported through the everyday moments too.
